Methodology

Explore monthly average gold and silver prices from 1971 to 2026 alongside the party that controlled the White House, the Senate and the House.

Choose a period type and then a period or presidency. Add market context such as the U.S. dollar or real yields, on its own chart or overlaid on the metals. Turn on event markers to see how each metal moved through elections, Fed policy changes and administrations.

Click a ◆ pin on a conflict or shock to zoom into the months around it and open a daily view of the run-up and the reaction. The bar that appears at the top takes you back, or Reset returns to 1971–2026. Esc also goes back.

Hover or tap any chart for exact values. Percentages under each president show the change in the monthly average over that term.
